There’s so much to love about this little Caribbean island: the beaches are breathtaking, the weather’s near-perfect, the food is top-notch, the history is fascinating and the people are warm and welcoming. Barbados has something for everyone, no matter if you travel on your own, with family, friends or on honeymoon.
We’ve put their heads together to give you our top five experiences that can be found in this tropical island paradise.
#1 Hit the beach
Barbados is home to some of the finest beaches in the world. All beaches in Barbados are public, so you’re free to explore every inch of the gorgeous 70 mile coastline.
You’ll find the quintessential postcard-perfect white sandy beaches bordered by the calm Caribbean sea on the ‘platinum’ west coast.
Barbados’ south coast is also home to powder soft sand, with gentle waves ideal for watersports.
Discover windswept beaches and rugged surf on the unspoilt east coast, and large majestic waves pounding the sandstone cliffs on the north coast.
#2 Charter a catamaran for a sunset cruise along Barbados’ west coast
The whole family will enjoy this unforgettable trip. Sail past some of the most luxurious properties on the island’s exclusive platinum coast.
Pause to jump into the crystal clear Caribbean sea and swim with turtles.
Sip champagne (or rum punch if you prefer) and look out for the elusive ‘green flash’ which can be seen as the last of the sun disappears into the ocean amongst incredible shades of ocre, orange and pink.
Witness flying fish (a national symbol of Barbados) leap out of the ocean and glide alongside the catamaran as you speed back to the harbour at the end of the evening.
#3 Get off the beaten track
Hire a car and head over to the rustic, undeveloped, windswept side of Barbados. Watch the unforgiving Atlantic ocean pound the shores at Bathsheba, and witness pro surfers take their chances in the world-renowned soup bowl surf spot.
See villages of quaint wooden chattel houses dotting lush Bajan hillsides and banana trees lining the roadside – and have your camera ready for the moment you spot a mischievous green monkey peeping out of the greenery!
#4 Discover Barbados’ rich heritage
Take time to visit St Nicholas Abbey. Nothing to do with monks (just re-named on a whim by a former owner), it’s a Jacobean mansion filled with antiques spanning it’s 350 year history, with beautifully tranquil grounds and a lovely cafe.
Even better, there’s a working rum distillery. You can witness the whole process, from grinding the sugar cane to sampling the end product. Barbados is famous for it’s fine rum, and it doesn’t get much better than this!
#5 Take a break from sunbathing and visit Hunte’s Gardens
Travel to centre of Barbados to the most amazing garden you’re ever likely to see.
After wandering through the meandering paths, you may well find the eccentric owner, Mr Hunte, on the veranda of his home ready to share some tall tales and perhaps even a slice of cake.
It’s a magical place; you wouldn’t believe it was a sink hole just 10 years ago!
